Press Pack Baby

So me and C-Dawg, decided we wanted to make a press pack to go with our press release, so we just have an invitation, some business cards and the press release, we also made a dvd cover, i absolutly love what we've done. It came really easy to us. We did try out different designs but in the end this worked best...enjoy

Editing this BAD BOY

So had all our hours of footage and we needed to edit them, so we started off with the old conversion, which took friggin ages, we had to do half one day and the other half the next, plus it doesn't help that the stupid room closes at 5, which is totally poo. So after hours of converting, we then had to save it all to disks because neither me or claire have hard drives, so 50 dvd later lol, We are finally on to the editing process, by we i mean me editing Claire giving me her imput. I was actually surprised at how fast we got it done, the vid looks great. We managed to to the re-wind fast forward bits we wanted to make it look all nice and choppy, we also managed to get the slow mo looking good. There are deffo some of me and Claires fav bit to the vid, also a good display of my brilliant editing skills. I know just were to cut a clip so its perfect lol...well i did do video editing for my a-levels, if i didnt know how to edit it i would be a total fool...lol. Anyway so got the editing done, then it was onto, the music!!! we really loved the music used in Kim Howells Noki Videos, but we didnt want to rip it off so we managed to find a track by the same artist, that sounds just as good so put the track on and got geraldine to help us lay the track perfectly so that it fades in and out at the right time. We showed our first edit to Dennis, and he just suggested we cut a few scenes down, and make some bits a bit sharper, so we did this. Then we showed Geraldine and she loved it, she suggested making some bits longer and and adding and taking away scenes to make some more effective. Olli suggested we changed the contrast on the film to make it brighter and more in your face, so we did that and we are really happy with the outcome, we made a little dvd and so here it is......

The Shoot

The day of the shoot came...long over due. But its all done now. The morning of the shoot we still had several things we needed to get, like a wig, some extra clothes, the camera, tripod, we managed to get it all in the end, i went to chatham claire went to uni. Claire sewed a pannel into the back of the dress so tha it fitted leroy, and she also cut out a Micky mouse from a t-shirt and sewed that onto our white tshirt. I ade long jersy arm strips, Claire also sewed some teddys and pom pom onto one of our tops, i crimped and back combed the wig and then we both started on the make up, we wanted to make leroy look liek a tranny, so we gave him big bright eyes with over the top large false eyelashes, when we put the look together on him it just looked so fantastic, so Noki. We found out that NOKI is IKON backwards, and noki deffo is a major fashion icon, just his general status even during this project has gone up so much. We then srted out the camera and got onto our first shoot, at the bus stop. Poor Leroy, leyroy is straight and at first he could handel all the funny looks and stares he got he was even joking with some of the men saying 'yall right darlin' but as we moved more into Chatham and the abuse got worse he couldnt handel it and began to cave to the embarresed awqward feeling you would feel going around chatham the way he did. We managed to get all our shots done, Sainsburys was great, we put the camera in a trolly to make it a smooth, tracking movement to follow Leroy around the shop, all the shots we got weve great actually it looked better then i could ever imagine in looking, We did some more shoots today to get the final stuff done, the outfits look great the styling erfect the shots are as good as they can be, now we just have to get down to the editing, Yay excitement!!! up at 9am tomorrow morning..not excitement!

Trip To London

Today me and Claire went to London to get some pick up some of Pierses hats he said we could borrow, we also thought we would pop into Nokis studio to see if there was anything we could borrow right then and their. It was quite a funny story, after getting off at the wrong tube station and wondering around for about half an hour asking everyone for directions we eventually bumped into someone that gave us a map, from this we managed to work out were we needed to go, as me and clairey are both avid second hand buyers when we saw a giant vintage pick and mix sale we had to go see what was happening and maby they would no were Nokis studio was…ahh and guess what little did we know the woman we asked was falicity one of the girls piers told us to email, and we were in fact standng in the remains of the studio space. He had just moved next door so everything was a total mess, and they were selling off the left over vintage gear they didn’t want anymore. All around the dingy little wearhouse were reminents of Noki, lights, masks ect. We were told if we waited half an hour we mite see the man himself. But unfortunately we had just missed him instead we spoke to his pr lady hannah, she said that due to the studio move everything was a bit hectic but that there was a possibility that she mite be able to get use one outfit by Tuesday, this is slightly to late as we need to start filming and editing as soon as possible, but the prospect of actually using a Noki garment is unreal and so if we need to re-shoot, I dont see why not. We also got an email from jj at the time saying that unfortunately again due to all the chaos he couldn’t led us any garments, but that he would be happy to answer any questions we had. So that’s great. We then popped to Pierses to pick up his hats wich are just great, we managed to get the actual ones used for noki, as well as the ‘kate blanchete’ hat so thats exciting. We were told to guard them with our lives!!! We were gonna go out to Madam JOJO’S in Soho cos Dennis told us there was a great drag queen night on and we still need a model, but in the end we just went home. Claire went to uni the next day and scouted for a model and found one so today we are goin to do some make up test shoots and see how they work out.

The Model

We are having such drama trying to find a model, we want a transvestite, but unfortunatly we dont know were to find one. We have asked Piers for help, he hasnt been much help on the tranny front but he has been great with letting us borrow the Noki hats he's designed, so were goin to pick them up in London soon. We have been trowling our gay friends facebooks to see if they knew any trannys and we actually came up with quite a large list, we emailed everyone but still noone has got back to us, we are running out of resourses, were thinking of trowling gay clubs in our area and maby in london to see if we can find anyone to model, here are some perspective models. We want someone that actually looks like a man dressed as a woman , be it in the butchness of their arms or their walk, thats why we dont want to use one of our gay friends, because their all quite thin and boyish looking, we want a transvestite!!!!

Inspiration

We have taken a lot of inspiration in camera movement from Kim howells Noki videos we really like the rewind play aspects of the vidio and the stp starty joltiness, as well as the industrial music music that is used.

The Presentation

We had our presentation today, it went really well concidering we have hardly done anything. We went out a couple of days ago and took pictures for a story board so we know were were goin to shoot each scene and what its goin to look like. We have also actually come up with a story line now.

The story

Business man, dresses normal in the work day, but when he comes home and gets out of his work clothes and changes into his everyday outfit we see that he is a tranny, well a Noki. We are then taken threw his every day life and the monotony of doing everyday chores . we also get an insite into his life and how he hates his life how he wishes he wasn’t gay and that he was just a normal man, not that he wishes society would accept him but that he could change to hide and fit in with society.

Making the Clothes

Today me a c-dog went out shopping for some Noki clothes we basically trowelled the streets of chatham and Rochester in the all the charity shops looking for things we could use to re-create the Noki outfits. We ended up with a long green bridesmaid dress, a gangster hat several t-shirts to cut up and braid together, socks, and few graphic teshirts to use as face masks,as well as some cheeper balls of wool to make more pom poms out of. When we got home we started making straight way!!!

KIM HOWELLS

We had our tutorial with Kim Howells, wich went brilliantly because it turns out that Kim is JJ Nokis house mate…brilliant, so we managaed to get jjs email so we can email him directly to see if we can borrow Nokis clothes. When we started our tutorial we didn’t really have much of an idea of the story line we wanted to create all we had was our mood boards and words that we wanted our vidio to be so kim got us to do a mood board to help us decide what our vidio wouls look like:

  • Attacking self and identity
  • Loud
  • Avent guarde
  • Boombox
  • Colourful
  • Vibrant
  • Exciting
  • Interesting
  • Choppy
  • Rewinds
  • Fast Forward
  • Supermarket
  • Greggs
  • High Street
  • Bus/Stop

From this we, new what we wanted our vidio to look like so we decided to do another mood board about ways in wich we could get our concept across. Kim really liked the idea about having different Noki characters in different social situations, a crazy person doin everyday things like getting a bus, going food shopping getting a greggs pasty, so we came up with the idea of a noki family, mother noki, baby noki, daddy noki, we decided this would be too much of a hard feat getting all these different characters to walk around the streets whilst we filmed. We also couldn’t decide wetither we wanted the people seeing the noki to be shocked or just expect it, not to be phased by the charaters so we, still have to discuss what we want. Kim told us some tricks of the trade with how to get the noki look down to a tee as she is the stylist for the company. Stripey socks we a must over the top of high heels to look like a hoof, she also told us about the necklaces being made up of torn strips of ripped jersey wich is something we can easily create. So we now have our concept, idea, vidio and styling.

In the afternoon session me and Claire went out and brought some wool…um 2pound 40 a ball, slightly ridic but anyway when we got back into class we watches pierses vidio and made a replicer bad boy head band in the style of micky mouse, a black headband with two black pom pom stuck either side like ears, it lookd really good, needless to say piers was extremely impressed by our excellent millinary skills, lol.

Tutorial with Geri

So wehad our first tutorial today it went really well. Geraldine though the concept went well with the designer ect. she like my little mood boards as a starting point. The more Claire had researched into Noki the more she is coming around to the idea of trannys. We also had a little talk with Piersy cos he designed the hats for some of the collections, we wanted to ask if we could borrow some of the hats and he agreed, he also gave us Nokis email and address so we can get intouch with him and ask to maby borrow the clothes, which if we pull it off will be totally amazing. However if not claire is a ex-fashion design student so im sure she can conjure up some similar outfit for the vid. So were basically discussing story lines for the actual video now, were thinking Amazonian black women tall broad scary and trannys as models, dressed head to toe in the wacky Noki style, maby put in normal everyday situations like waiting for the bus, or doing the shopping something like that. Heres a little example i knocked up:

Geraldine suggested toddlers with masks on beating up a dog...so we kind of taken that idea and changed it a bit for our other idea. Again the Amazonian women and tranny dressed to the nines in a large circle beating something up or doing something t a center point, i dont know we have to work with it. Anyway thats were we are so far.

Research - Brainstorm

So me and Clairey needed to get on the same page, so we sat down and did a brain storm, i thought it was gonna go to shit cos she made it very clear she didnt like the tranny, party idea. She thinks it too obvious and cheesy and i have to say i do agree, although it would be fun. We decided we need to think outside the box, come up with something really original, but still fun. We talked about different types of rebellion, the law, politics, terrorists, but i didnt like these ideas, i dont wan tot go down the controversial route, making a political point, i dont want to go as deep as that because sometime i think you can get too bogged down with the message and not look at the big picture.

We then started to talk about social rebellion, and identity rebellion. For example punks, decided to go against 'typical' fashion of the time and be rebels. We also talked about how people change themselves. Identity rebellion. Going against what ur natural assets for example getting plastic surgery or having anorexia, the need to change the way u look. This then brought us back to Noki and how his identity is a supposed mystery, how he hides his face and doesnt want to be seen, as well as his collections, the masks ect so the models cant be recognized. and so in the end we kind of came up with this as a starting point:

'' rebelling against your own identity''

As of yet were not sure how we want to represent this in a film format, but this is our concept starting point.

After this we decided to have a little lookey at last years film...to be honest they were all pretty shit apart from the one i was in. What they helped us realize was how we dont want our film to look.

All the films either had:
  • black and white balloons in them (someone asked if they were sponsored by a balloon company)
  • a seriously dark and ominous feel
  • some kind of dream sequence
  • alot of black
  • and over all amateur cheeze.
These are all thing we do not want to include in our vidio for defenate !!!!!

Exactly what is REBELLIOUS?

What first comes into your mind when you first hear the word rebellious
  • Naughty
  • Illegal
  • Reckless
  • Young
  • Against Expectations.
Well iv decided to do some research into the word, here is what the Dictionary has to say:

re⋅bel⋅lious

NOKI'S HOUSE OF SUSTAINABILITY

I briefly recall Kim Howells mentioning Noki, and working and styling for them so i was quite happy to get them as a designer. i really like Kims styling its so fun and bubbily and bright, which is just like the brand Noki's stuff. When i researched further into the brand i likes it even more.

Noki likes to recycle and customize old clothes, its kind of a twist on the ‘vintage’ and ‘retro’ trends. The designs are really avant gard occasionally using transvestites as models. It give the whole brand that seedy rebellious edge, which worked brilliantly for our work and out other inspirational world is rebellious. The designs include cartoon motifs and using garments in unconventional ways for example the neckline of a dress as the waist line of a skirt. As well as crazy headwear and hats, a few of which i think mite have been designed by the master milliner Mr. Piers Attkinson, if indeed they are we and claire mite have to have a chat with him about borrowing some of the hatty poos. This style is going to be so much fun to work with.

Here are some images:

Mr.Noki, is supposedly a mystery man, appearing only with his mask on, however my research has shown that he is actually none other then….DUN DUN DUN (PREPARE FOR BIG REVEAL)

“NOKI did not disappoint at London's Fashion East show with a melange of thrift that appeared to be styled by Edward Scissorhands.

Jonathan "JJ" Hudson is a club kid cum music industry stylist who goes by the name NOKI and he states that House of Sustainability is not for sale. Something of a recluse you'll rarely see pictures of him (then only with trademark mask) and he doesn't want to sell you clothes.

The Noki House of Sustainability (NHS) is about inspiring everyone to have a bash at customizing and recycling their old stuff. You don't have to go nuts attacking an old bridesmaid's dress with scissors and pvc- try altering necklines and hemlines or head to a haberdashers and get some beads to tart up a plain top.

Appropriately enough, both Gareth Pugh and his mate, BoomBox founder and current patron saint of London drag queens, Richard Mortimer, were in the front row.”

Here are some images of the man in question…..

In the second image down (above) Noki is photographed with skin the lead singer from Skunk Anansie as a model for his colection, Skin is another of Kims clients. Kim Howells mentioned Noki to us in our creative styling lectures for our first projects, so I had a look at her website and found some great vids of there collections. I hope she wont mind me guiding you to them.
